ABS Grade AH32 is a high-strength structural steel plate certified by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), primarily used in the construction of ship hulls, offshore platforms and marine engineering structures.
The AH32 grade designation follows the internationally recognised ship plate naming system, with the components defined as follows:
A: Represents the steel’s quality grade (impact toughness grade). Grade A typically indicates good toughness at 0°C.
H: Represents high-strength steel.
32: Represents its minimum yield strength. The value 32 corresponds to 315 MPa (approximately 32 kg/mm²).
The steel plates have a minimum yield strength of 315 MPa and a tensile strength range of 440–590 MPa, providing excellent load-bearing capacity. They ensure the structural integrity of ships and offshore platforms even under dynamic marine loads.
At 0°C, the impact energy absorption is ≥ 31 J, effectively preventing brittle fracture during polar navigation or in low-temperature marine environments.
Featuring a low-carbon microalloyed design with CEV ≤ 0.40%, the steel supports a variety of welding processes, ensuring consistent joint quality. Furthermore, the steel performs well in cold bending, stamping and cutting operations, meeting the manufacturing requirements of complex hull structures.
The addition of alloying elements such as copper (Cu), nickel (Ni) and chromium (Cr) enhances the steel plate’s resistance to seawater, chemical substances and microbial corrosion, thereby extending the service life of marine structures in harsh marine environments.
The product fully complies with ABS standards and is compatible with classification society grades such as CCS AH32, BV AH32, NV A32, GL-A32, LR AH32 and other classification society grades, offering high versatility and wide application across various marine and offshore engineering scenarios.
Compared to ordinary carbon steel, the yield strength is increased by approximately 35%, enabling a reduction in structural steel usage, lowering the hull’s deadweight, and improving fuel efficiency, thereby effectively reducing overall construction and operational costs.

To ensure the quality of our ABS-Class AH32 marine steel plates, we exercise strict control over every stage of the process, from raw material selection to production and testing. We adhere to international standards and incorporate best practices from the steel structure industry:
We utilise high-purity scrap steel and molten iron, adding alloying elements in accordance with precise chemical composition standards to ensure the purity and compositional stability of the molten steel.
Hot Rolling: We employ advanced hot rolling processes, controlling the rolling temperature between 1100–900°C and optimising the cooling rate to refine the grain structure.
Heat Treatment: Through normalising and tempering (followed by slow cooling after holding at 560°C), we eliminate residual stresses and enhance overall mechanical properties.
The steel plates undergo shot blasting to achieve Sa2.5 rust removal standards, with a surface roughness of Ra ≤ 12.5 μm. This enhances coating adhesion and extends the service life of the coating in marine environments.
We carry out comprehensive testing, including spectroscopic analysis, tensile and impact tests, and ultrasonic testing, to ensure that every batch of steel plates meets ABS specifications and customer requirements.

A:
1. Check the Material Test Certificate (MTC): The steel plates purchased must be accompanied by a Material Test Certificate bearing the official ABS seal.
2. Check the steel plate stamp: The surface of the steel plate should bear a stamp applied by an ABS surveyor, which must include: the manufacturer’s code, material grade (AH32), and furnace number / batch number
3.Third-party verification: You can verify the authenticity of the certificate and the steel plate by entering the reference number on the certificate into the official ABS online database or by contacting your local ABS office.
A:
Due to the low carbon equivalent of ABS AH32 shipbuilding steel plate, it exhibits excellent weldability. It is suitable for most mainstream welding processes, such as submerged arc welding (SAW) and gas shielded arc welding (GMAW/FCAW). However, when welding thick plates, it is still recommended to carry out appropriate preheating in accordance with the specifications to prevent cold cracking.
A:
Due to its high strength, AH32 marine steel plates is primarily used in the following critical structures:
Hull plating, main decks, hatch covers on bulk carriers, offshore platforms and offshore engineering structures
A:
These four grades have identical strength; the key difference lies in the test temperature for low-temperature impact toughness:
AH32: Impact test at 0°C.
DH32: -20°C impact test.
EH32: -40°C impact test.
FH32: -60°C impact test.
The choice of steel grade depends on the ambient temperature in which the vessel operates and the criticality of the hull structure in question.
