ASME SA516 Gr.70 pressure vessel steel plates successfully delivered to a client in Abu Dhabi

I. Project Background: For the construction of large-scale liquefied petroleum gas storage tanks

This batch of steel plates will be used in the manufacture of six large-scale liquefied petroleum gas storage tanks—known as ‘bullet-type vessels’—being constructed by the client. These tanks will ultimately be installed at a natural gas processing plant in Abu Dhabi. The project imposes extremely stringent technical requirements regarding the mechanical properties, low-temperature toughness and traceability of the materials.

II. Stringent Client Requirements and Technical Standards

To ensure the long-term safe operation of the storage tanks under harsh operating conditions, the client has specified the following material certification and inspection requirements:

ASME SA516 Gr.70 Certification: The steel plates must fully comply with the requirements of ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Section II, Part A.

EN 10204 Type 3.2 Inspection Certificate: Inspection must be carried out and certification issued by an authorised third-party body.

Normalising heat treatment: To ensure the steel plates retain excellent impact toughness even in environments as low as -40°C.

100% ultrasonic testing (UT): Comprehensive non-destructive testing of every steel plate in accordance with the ASTM A435 standard.

Complete mill test certificates (MTC): Must include the chemical composition, tensile properties and impact test results for each furnace batch.

III. Precise Material Supply and Quality Assurance

Based on the above standards, we have precisely allocated and supplied 320 tonnes of normalised SA516 Gr.70 steel plates from the steel mill’s inventory. All steel plates strictly comply with the following key performance indicators:

Tensile Strength: ≥70 ksi (483 MPa)

Yield Strength: ≥38 ksi (262 MPa)

Elongation: ≥21%

Impact test temperature: -40°C

Charpy V-notch impact energy: Average ≥27 J, minimum per piece ≥20 J

Furthermore, the steel plates are available in thicknesses ranging from 12 mm to 45 mm, widths from 2,000 mm to 2,500 mm, and lengths from 6,000 mm to 10,000 mm, fully meeting the client’s diverse requirements for pressure vessel plates of various dimensions.
