BV Grade DH36 shipbuilding steel plate is a high-strength, low-temperature-resistant structural steel plate for marine applications certified by Bureau Veritas (BV). It has a minimum yield strength of 315 MPa and a tensile strength of 450–570 MPa, and is required to pass the -20°C Charpy V-notch impact test.
This product offers excellent structural strength, low-temperature impact toughness at -20°C, good resistance to seawater corrosion, and outstanding fatigue resistance. It maintains stable mechanical properties even under long-term extreme cyclic loading, exposure to cold snaps, and high-salt-fog corrosion environments, effectively preventing brittle fracture, fatigue cracking, and deformation failure.
BV Grade DH36 shipbuilding steel plates also offer good weldability and formability, and are widely used in the construction of large vessels, deep-water offshore engineering projects in cold regions, and high-standard offshore structural facilities.
BV: Certified by Bureau Veritas (BV)
D: Quality grade "D" (Impact toughness grade "D," mandatory impact test at -20°C)
H: High strength steel
36: Yield strength ≥ 355 MPa (≈ 36 kgf/mm²)

It can reliably withstand long-term heavy loads and complex alternating stresses from wind and waves, fully meeting the structural safety requirements of high-load marine facilities such as heavy-duty container ships, large oil tankers, and deep-sea platforms, ensuring long-term stable operation under extreme conditions.
It effectively resists brittle fracture, structural cracking, and fatigue damage in cold waters and seasonal low-temperature environments, maintaining the structural integrity of heavy-duty ship hulls and offshore structures in cold regions, and withstanding harsh, cold marine climatic conditions year-round.
With low susceptibility to cold cracking during welding and excellent ductility and plasticity, it supports processes such as precision cutting, hot and cold bending, roll forming, and high-efficiency all-position welding. This significantly improves construction efficiency for ships and offshore engineering projects in cold regions and reduces long-term project costs.
Effectively delays corrosion-induced aging and fatigue damage, ensuring the safe operation and long-term service life of core components in heavy-load ship hulls and critical offshore structures under harsh, cold operating conditions.
While meeting BV compliance standards, high strength, and specialized low-temperature toughness, the material avoids the performance redundancy and cost inefficiencies associated with ultra-low-temperature steels, achieving a reasonable balance between engineering economy and safety.
The product complies with multiple major international marine steel standards, supports dual or multiple classification society joint certifications, and meets marine engineering acceptance requirements in various regions worldwide.
Used in critical high-load structures for large ocean-going container ships, bulk carriers, supertankers, ocean-going luxury cruise ships, northern coastal fishing vessels, and heavy-duty vessels operating in cold seas during seasonal voyages, such as hull plating, heavy-duty main decks, load-bearing bulkheads, hull girder structures, and bottom stiffeners.
Used in critical structures for heavy-duty facilities in cold waters, such as fixed drilling platforms, offshore work and living platforms, offshore wind power foundation platforms, Floating Production, Storage, and Offloading (FPSO) units, and large offshore operation equipment. These include platform heavy-duty decks, large equipment supports, main support trusses, and fixed components.
Used in ports and coastal infrastructure in cold regions, such as heavy-duty port structures, port collision protection facilities, heavy-duty offshore guardrails, large-vessel berthing facilities, breakwater steel structures, and heavy-duty support structures for coastal engineering projects.
Critical high-load structural components for marine auxiliary equipment in cold regions, including heavy-duty ship crane bases, large winch supports, main load-bearing structures in engine rooms, and mounting frames for heavy offshore construction equipment.
A:
Yes. Ultrasonic testing (UT) at various levels can be performed according to customer requirements to detect internal inclusions and defects in the steel plates.
A:
Yes. All of our BV DH36 steel plates support third-party inspections by internationally recognized authorities such as SGS, BV, DNV, and ABS. The products come with complete official BV certification and original Mill Test Certificates (MTCs), enabling full-process quality traceability for heavy-duty offshore engineering projects in cold regions worldwide.
A:
Yes. We offer full-range custom manufacturing and one-stop value-added processing services for BV DH36 shipbuilding steel plates. All custom products come with an official BV-certified Mill Test Certificate (MTC), meeting the requirements for custom sizing, precision machining, and compliance verification for heavy-duty offshore engineering projects in cold waters worldwide.
A:
The key differences between the two lie in their low-temperature impact toughness grades and application scenarios:
BV DH36: Requires impact toughness at -20°C and is suitable for conventional cold-water regions and seasonal low-temperature operating conditions;
BV EH36: Requires impact toughness at -40°C and is suitable for polar and extreme sub-zero marine environments.
Selection Recommendations:
1) For projects in conventional cold waters, BV DH36 offers better value for money and avoids the performance redundancy and additional costs associated with BV EH36.
2) Projects in polar and extremely low-temperature marine environments must use BV EH36 to prevent structural brittle fracture under harsh, extremely low-temperature marine conditions.
A:
Yes. All of our BV DH36 steel plates are sourced from leading Chinese steel mills recognized by BV. They hold valid official certification from Bureau Veritas (BV) and are accompanied by an EN 10204 3.2 Mill Test Certificate (MTC).
Each batch of steel plates is traceable by production furnace number, enabling full-lifecycle quality traceability management. The certificates are valid worldwide and fully meet requirements for ship registration, offshore engineering acceptance, third-party inspection and certification, and cross-border customs clearance.
A:
Both have the same low-temperature impact toughness; the key differences lie in their strength grades and load-bearing capacities:
BV DH32: Minimum yield strength of 315 MPa; suitable for ships operating in cold waters and offshore engineering projects under moderate loads, offering good value for money;
BV DH36: Minimum yield strength of 355 MPa; offers higher strength and is suitable for heavy-load vessels and offshore engineering projects in cold waters.
Selection Recommendation: For applications with moderate load requirements, BV DH32 is more cost-effective; for high-load or extreme operating conditions, BV DH36 should be selected.
