Knowledge
BV DH36 shipbuilding steel plates have a minimum yield strength of 355 MPa and a tensile strength ranging from 490 to 630 MPa, enabling them to reliably withstand the heavy static loads and high-frequency alternating dynamic loads experienced by large vessels and offshore structures during service.
Through fine-grain strengthening and controlled rolling and cooling processes, a dense and uniform ferritic-pearlitic microstructure is formed within the material, significantly enhancing structural stiffness and resistance to deformation. This effectively suppresses structural distortion, localized stress concentration, and fatigue damage caused by the ship’s deadweight, sudden cold snaps, and long-distance voyages, fully meeting the design stiffness and strength requirements for primary load-bearing components of large bulk carriers, container ships, and offshore platforms in cold regions.
The core advantage of BV DH36 shipbuilding steel plates lies in their certified -20°C Charpy V-notch impact toughness; this parameter distinguishes them fundamentally from the BV AH36 (limited to 0°C) and BV DH32 steel grades.
AH36 is prone to cold brittle fracture under high-load conditions at sub-zero temperatures, while DH32 struggles to meet the strength thresholds required for extreme heavy loads.
Through a high-purity, low-carbon composition design and grain refinement processes, BV DH36 shipbuilding steel plates effectively suppress the transition from toughness to brittleness at low temperatures, ensuring they consistently maintain excellent crack resistance and structural integrity under extreme cold waves and prolonged immersion in sub-zero seawater. This provides all-weather operational safety assurance for high-load structures in cold-temperature maritime regions ranging from -20°C to 0°C.
BV DH36 shipbuilding steel plates employ a graded carbon equivalent design (≤0.38% / ≤0.40%) and strictly control the content of impurities such as sulfur and phosphorus, significantly reducing susceptibility to cold cracking during welding and ensuring full compatibility with mainstream marine welding processes such as SAW, GMAW, and SMAW.
Welding without preheating is achievable for standard thicknesses (≤18 mm); for thick plates (>18 mm) and in cold, humid environments, only low-level preheating at 70–90°C is required to ensure weld quality, eliminating the need for complex post-weld heat treatment.
The weld joints exhibit a good balance of strength and toughness with a low defect rate, significantly improving construction efficiency and reliability at shipyards in cold regions.
Utilizing vacuum degassing and deep-purification smelting processes, BV DH36 shipbuilding steel plates have extremely low inclusion content. Combined with a dense, fine-grained microstructure, they effectively resist long-term immersion in low-temperature seawater, salt spray corrosion, and damage from biofouling.
Under the combined effects of cyclic cold-wave loads and tidal impacts, the material exhibits excellent fatigue resistance, significantly delaying the initiation and propagation of fatigue cracks.
When used in conjunction with specialized anti-corrosion coating systems for cold regions, it fully meets the long-term operational requirements of large commercial vessels and offshore facilities in cold-region environments.
BV DH36 shipbuilding steel plates precisely bridge the performance and cost gap between DH32 and EH36.
Compared to EH36 steel plates, they can reduce overall project costs by approximately 19% to 23% while fully meeting safety standards for high-load applications in cold regions; compared to DH32 and AH36, it fundamentally eliminates the dual risks of insufficient strength margin and cold brittleness failure in high-load environments at sub-zero temperatures.
Consequently, BV DH36 shipbuilding steel plates have become the high-strength structural steel option offering the best overall cost-performance ratio for large-scale shipbuilding and offshore engineering projects in cold regions worldwide.
