This Vietnamese client, based in Haiphong City, is a shipyard specialising in the construction of coastal vessels and workboats, and has experienced rapid business growth in recent years. However, as production scale has expanded, the client has faced a series of typical challenges in the procurement of shipbuilding steel plates:
There was an urgent need for a supplier of ship plates capable of providing CCS certification and complete documentation to meet Vietnamese import and classification society certification requirements.
a) Delivery delays disrupting production schedules.
b) Incomplete MTC (Material Test Certificate) documentation causing customs clearance delays.
c) Inconsistent plate quality leading to welding issues.
d) Language barriers making it difficult to communicate technical requirements.
The client urgently required not just a one-off supplier, but a long-term partner capable of consistently providing high-quality products, reliable delivery and complete documentation.
To meet the client’s shipbuilding requirements, we worked closely with the shipyard’s procurement and technical teams to resolve each of the above challenges.
We recommended CCS Grade A shipbuilding steel plates with a yield strength of 235–280 MPa, offering excellent weldability and perfectly meeting the client’s technical requirements for hull construction.
To assist the client in smoothly navigating Vietnamese import regulations and customs clearance procedures, we provided:
a) A complete CCS-certified Mill Test Certificate (MTC) for each steel plate.
b) A full set of commercial documents compliant with Vietnamese customs requirements.
c) Technical data sheets in both English and Vietnamese.
a) Dimensional inspection of all plates.
b) Verification of surface quality and flatness.
c) Ensuring correct batch number and CCS stamp markings.
d) Coordination with the client’s designated third-party inspectors for verification.
a) Use of professional export packaging featuring waterproofing and steel reinforcement.
b) Advance booking of direct shipping to Haiphong Port.
c) Provision of real-time cargo tracking updates.
d) Advance submission of documents required for customs clearance.
The production manager at this shipyard spoke highly of this batch of CCS Grade A steel plates:
“Production managers tend to notice details that the procurement department might overlook. The performance of these CCS Grade A steel plates is exceptionally consistent—there is very little variation in mechanical properties from batch to batch. This means we do not need to frequently adjust our cutting parameters, and welders can work smoothly, avoiding unexpected issues.”
“The flatness of the plates is also excellent. When we place the plates on the assembly jigs, they lie flat and fit snugly, eliminating the need for additional flame straightening. This saves us a significant amount of labour time.”
“We are currently using these steel plates to build three offshore vessels. The assembly of the various hull sections is proceeding smoothly, and the classification society surveyors have already accepted all our welds. This is exactly what we expect from a materials supplier.”
Finally, the successful delivery of CCS Grade A shipbuilding steel plates to Haiphong Port in Vietnam has not only resolved the client’s key challenges regarding material consistency, documentation compliance and logistics efficiency, but has also earned high praise from the production line through its proven performance in actual use. Moving forward, we will continue to support the construction needs of more shipyards with consistent product quality and a comprehensive service system.
