General Description of S460QL1 High-strength Steel Plate

EN 10025-6 S460QL1 is a premium, quenched and tempered steel plate that offers an outstanding combination of high strength (460 MPa min yield), exceptional low-temperature toughness (-60°C), and good weldability. It is the preferred material for designing structures and machinery that are lightweight, durable, safe, and capable of withstanding extreme loads and harsh environments.

S460QL1 High-strength Steel Plate significantly outperforms comparable steel grades in low-temperature toughness at -60°C and through-thickness performance, making it particularly suitable for critical load-bearing structures in extreme environments.

Weldability	Good weldability, but strict process procedures (Pre-heating, Low Hydrogen Welding Materials, Post-Weld Heat Treatment, etc.) must still be followed during welding. The core risks are cold cracking (hydrogen-induced cracking) and toughness degradation in the heat-affected zone (HAZ).
Machinability	Cutting can be performed using carbide tools, laser, plasma, or flame cutting, but heat input must be controlled to avoid embrittlement in the heat-affected zone. Cold working such as bending and stamping requires controlling the deformation rate to avoid the formation of cracks.
Surface Quality	Default surface in hot-rolled condition. Additional treatments such as shot peening and painting can be required upon request.
Quality Control	Provide the original material certificate. Non-destructive testing (such as UT ultrasonic testing), Charpy V-notch impact test, and Z-direction property test (Grades Z15/Z25/Z35) can be added as required.
