LR Grade A Shipbuilding Steel Equivalent Materials

LR Grade A is a ordinary-strength marine structural steel certified by Lloyd’s Register (LR). Within the international shipbuilding industry, the rules and regulations of major classification societies (such as CCS, ABS, DNV, BV, NK, etc.) are mutually recognized and aligned.

LR Grade A marine steel is a ordinary-strength hull structural steel specified by Lloyd’s Register (LR). Its yield strength, tensile strength, and chemical composition requirements are essentially consistent with those of ordinary-strength ship plates of corresponding grades from other major classification societies.

In shipbuilding and offshore engineering, Grade A steels from the following classification societies are fully equivalent and mutually recognized; they can be used interchangeably as long as the corresponding classification society certificate is held.

1. Mutually Recognized Equivalent Materials by Classification Societies

Classification Society AbbreviationFull Name of Classification SocietyEquivalent Material Grade
LRLloyd's RegisterLR Grade A (or LR A)
DNVDet Norske VeritasDNV Grade A (or NV A)
ABSAmerican Bureau of ShippingABS Grade A (or ABS A)
BVBureau VeritasBV Grade A (or BV A)
CCSChina Classification SocietyCCS Grade A (or CCS A)
NKNippon Kaiji KyokaiNK Grade A (or KA)
KRKorean Register of ShippingKR Grade A (or KR A)
RINARegistro Italiano NavaleRINA Grade A (or RINA A)

Note: Although the performance is fully equivalent, prior to substitution in actual use, approval must be obtained from the shipowner and the ship surveyor stationed at the mill, and it must be ensured that the steel is accompanied by a Mill Test Certificate from the corresponding classification society.

2. Key Performance Parameters for LR Grade A

ItemRequirements
Yield Strength≥ 235 MPa
Tensile Strength400 - 520 MPa
Elongation≥ 22%
Delivery ConditionHR, N, TMCP

3. Precautions for Substitution

1) The designation “Grade A” merely indicates a similar strength grade and does not imply that certificates are automatically interchangeable.

2) Shipyards or shipowners typically require steel plates to be accompanied by a Mill Test Certificate approved by the relevant classification society.

3) If used in the construction of a vessel that has already been classified, the following must be confirmed:

a) Whether the target classification society accepts the substitute grade;

b) Whether the steel mill holds the necessary certification from the relevant classification society;

c) Whether the plate thickness range meets the design requirements.
