Characteristics and Advantages of BV Grade EH36 Marine Structural Steel Plates

BV Grade EH36 is a BV-certified, high-strength cryogenic marine steel that combines high yield strength, low-temperature toughness at -40°C, excellent cryogenic weldability, and resistance to deep-sea corrosion fatigue. It effectively addresses safety challenges in high-load-bearing structures for polar marine engineering and serves as the mainstream structural steel for heavy-duty polar shipbuilding and cryogenic deep-sea engineering projects worldwide.

1. High strength bearing capacity

BV Grade EH36 marine structural steel plate provides a solid design foundation for modern large ships and marine engineering with its excellent strength indicators.

Its high yield strength and tensile strength enable designers to significantly reduce the thickness of the plates while ensuring structural safety, thereby promoting lightweighting of the hull and improving load capacity and fuel economy.

More importantly, the steel plate has excellent impact resistance and can effectively resist the collision and compression of dense floating ice and thick ice ridges in polar waters. At the same time, it can handle the huge static and dynamic loads generated by overweight cargo during loading, unloading, and navigation, as well as the repeated effects of extreme alternating ocean stresses such as long-term wave impact and ship bending.

With this comprehensive load-bearing capacity, BV Grade EH36 fully meets the rigorous structural requirements of large polar cargo ships, heavy icebreakers, and ultra large offshore floating platforms under high load and high-risk conditions, laying a reliable foundation for the safe operation of equipment throughout its entire lifecycle.

2. -40 ℃ ultra-low temperature impact toughness

One of the biggest threats faced by marine structures serving in polar and high latitude cold regions is the brittle transformation of steel in ultra-low temperature environments.

BV Grade EH36 steel plate maintains excellent impact absorption energy at -40 ℃ and lower temperatures through strict chemical composition control and optimized heat treatment processes, fundamentally solving the risk of low-temperature brittle fracture.

This feature ensures that the hull and platform structure can maintain integrity and stability even when subjected to extreme cold freezing, frequent severe ice wave erosion, and severe temperature fluctuations, avoiding sudden fracture failure.

For heavy marine structures operating in Arctic shipping routes, Antarctic research stations, and ice zones, this steel plate significantly enhances operational safety in extreme environments, while effectively extending the service life of critical load-bearing components and reducing costly maintenance and suspension losses caused by low-temperature damage.

3. Excellent anti fatigue performance

The marine engineering structures in polar and cold regions not only bear static loads, but are also exposed to dynamic alternating stress fields caused by waves, ice impacts, thruster vibrations, and cargo loading and unloading for a long time. Fatigue failure is one of the core factors limiting the service life of the structures.

BV Grade EH36, with its fine grain structure and low inclusion control, exhibits excellent resistance to fatigue crack initiation and propagation, especially under the coupling effect of extreme low temperature and strong ice impact, which can significantly delay the accumulation process of fatigue damage.

This characteristic makes the steel plate an ideal material for key parts of heavy-duty polar ship hulls, such as the icebreaking area at the bow, the ice zone on the side of the ship, the engine room base, as well as for long life and high reliability components such as the pile legs and support nodes of ultra large cold offshore platforms.

In actual service, its anti fatigue advantage can effectively reduce the frequency of maintenance throughout the entire life cycle, ensuring the continuous and safe operation of the structure for decades of design life.

4. Excellent weldability

The construction of large ships and offshore platforms relies heavily on welding connections, and the quality of welding directly determines the overall integrity of the structure.

BV Grade EH36 steel plate exhibits extremely low sensitivity to welding cracks in low-temperature environments, and its carbon equivalent design is reasonable, effectively suppressing the occurrence of hydrogen induced cracks and cold cracks.

This material supports various efficient welding processes such as manual arc welding, submerged arc welding, gas shielded welding, etc. Even under low-temperature outdoor construction conditions in winter, there is no need for complex and cumbersome preheating procedures before welding, or only simple and short-term preheating treatment can meet the process requirements.

This advantage not only greatly simplifies the construction process, reduces energy consumption and welding material consumption, but also effectively shortens the construction period. At the same time, it reduces deformation and residual stress caused by uneven preheating, ensuring a good match between the mechanical properties of the welded joint and the base material, and providing strong guarantees for the high-quality construction of large-scale polar projects.

5. Excellent processability

In addition to welding performance, the convenience of cold and hot processing of steel plates also directly affects construction efficiency and cost.

BV Grade EH36 maintains excellent ductility and plasticity at low temperatures, with stable elongation at break and cold bending performance, making it easy for shipyards and manufacturing units to carry out on-site processing operations such as flame cutting, plasma cutting, mechanical shearing, cold bending, and plate rolling.

Even in high-altitude winter low-temperature workshops or outdoor environments, this material is not prone to rapid work hardening or edge cracking, significantly improving cutting accuracy and bending forming quality.

For polar heavy-duty marine engineering, this excellent processing performance means shorter prefabrication time, less rework rate, and lower tool loss, effectively reducing overall construction and maintenance costs, while providing processing feasibility for designing diverse and complex structural nodes.

6. Excellent resistance to seawater corrosion

The seawater, high salt spray, tidal dry wet alternation, and polar specific freeze-thaw cycle aging in the marine environment constitute multiple corrosion attacks on the surface and cross-section of steel plates.

BV Grade EH36 has formed a dense and stable surface protective rust layer through reasonable addition of alloying elements (such as copper, chromium, nickel, etc.) and clean steel smelting process, significantly improving its ability to resist chloride ion erosion and pitting corrosion.

Especially in polar ice regions, the friction of ice layers and repeated infiltration of melted ice water can accelerate the corrosion rate of conventional steel. With its excellent corrosion resistance, this steel plate effectively delays the occurrence of corrosion thinning and stress corrosion cracking, thereby extending the maintenance interval and service life of core components such as hull outer panels, ballast tanks, seawater pipelines, and platform underwater structures.

This feature not only reduces the burden of anti-corrosion coating and cathodic protection system, but also provides a solid guarantee for the long-term economic operation of offshore structures in harsh environments in cold regions.
