Equivalent Materials for CCS DH36 Steel
- May 27, 2026
Knowledge
Due to the harmonisation of standards by the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS), classification societies worldwide have adopted a highly unified naming system for DH36 marine steel. The following grades are fully equivalent in performance to CCS DH36 and may be used interchangeably (subject to provision of the relevant classification society’s certification):
| Country/Region | Classification Society (Standard) | Corresponding Grade |
|---|---|---|
| China | CCS (China Classification Society) | CCS DH36 |
| United States | ABS (American Bureau of Shipping) | ABS DH36 |
| Norway | DNV (Det Norske Veritas) | DNV D36 |
| United Kingdom | LR (Lloyd's Register) | LR DH36 |
| France | BV (Bureau Veritas) | BV DH36 |
| Italy | RINA (Rina) | RINA DH36 |
| Japan | NK (Nippon Kaiji Kyokai) | K D36 |
| South Korea | KR (Korea Register of Shipping) | R D36 |
As the key basis for equivalence, the mechanical properties of CCS DH36 are essentially consistent with those of its corresponding grades, as shown in the table below:
| Performance | Typical values |
|---|---|
| Yield Strength (ReH) | ≥ 355 MPa |
| Tensile Strength | 490 - 630 MPa |
| Elongation (A) | ≥ 21 % |
| Impact Test Temperature | - 20 ℃ |
| Impact Energy | ≥ 34 J (Longitudinal), ≥ 24 J (Transverse), |
All equivalent materials used in ships and offshore engineering must be accompanied by a Factory Approval Certificate and a Product Quality Certificate issued by the relevant classification society. The surface of the steel plates must bear a clear classification society mark and grade designation.
If the original design specified Z-direction laminar tear resistance (Z15/Z25/Z35), ultrasonic testing (UT) or other special tests, the equivalent material must also meet the same requirements.
Materials with lower low-temperature toughness (e.g. AH36, impact test at 0°C only) must under no circumstances be substituted for DH36 in structural components intended for use in environments at -20°C or below.
Following the substitution of equivalent materials, a new welding procedure qualification (WPS) must be carried out to ensure that the performance of the welded joints meets the requirements.
