CCS Grade A Shipbuilding Steel Plate Dimensions and Tolerances

CCS Grade A is a general-strength hull structural steel plate certified by the China Classification Society (CCS), complying with the GB/T 712-2022 standard and the CCS Specifications for Marine Steel. CCS Grade A shipbuilding steel plates are classified as 235 MPa grade general-strength hull structural steel. They are characterised by their low cost, excellent ductility and ease of fabrication, and are widely used in bulk carriers, barges, workboats and simple offshore structures. This article provides a detailed overview of the standard dimensions, tolerance ranges and custom fabrication services available for CCS Grade A shipbuilding steel plates, with the aim of offering a selection guide for purchasers.

1. Standard Dimensions

1.1 Thickness Range

Standard rolled thickness: 3 - 300 mm

Common thickness for shipbuilding: 5 - 40 mm

Heavy-duty structural plates: 40 - 100 mm

Extra-thick special-purpose plates: up to 300 mm

Typical applications:

5 - 20 mm: ship compartment bulkheads, deck hatches

20 - 40 mm: Ship bottom plates, side plates

1.2 Width Range

Standard widths: 1200 - 4200 mm

Common fixed widths: 1500, 1800, 2000, 2400, 3000 mm

Custom widths: Up to 4500 mm (reducing the number of weld seams and improving hull watertightness)

1.3 Length Range

Standard lengths: 3000 - 18000 mm

Standard factory lengths: 6000, 12000 mm

Custom lengths: Support for extra-long lengths to accommodate integrated cutting of large hull sections

2. Dimensional Tolerance Standards (in accordance with GB/T 712 and CCS specifications)

2.1 Thickness Tolerances

ThicknessTolerance
≤ 10 mm±0.5 mm
10 - 20 mm±0.7 mm
20 - 50 mm±1.0 mm
> 50 mm±1.5 mm

2.2 Width Tolerances

WidthTolerance
≤ 2500 mm±5 mm
> 2500 mm±8 mm

* For export orders, negative tolerances (-0.3 / 0 mm) are generally applied to facilitate assembly and construction at shipyards.

2.3 Length Tolerances

LengthTolerance
≤ 12000 mm±10 mm
> 12000 mm±15 mm

* For export orders, negative tolerances (-0.3 / 0 mm) are generally applied to facilitate assembly and construction at shipyards.

2.4 Flatness Tolerances

FlatnessTolerance
Per meter≤ 3 mm
Total (length ≤ 12000 mm)≤ 10 mm

* No waviness or sickle-bend is permitted to ensure the flatness of hull assembly.

3. Customised Processing Services

CCS Grade A shipbuilding steel plates support the following processing services:

Custom cutting: flame cutting, plasma cutting, laser cutting

Z-direction properties: Z15 / Z25 / Z35

Surface treatment: Sa2.5 shot blasting, epoxy primer coating
