Applications of ABS EH36 Marine Steel Plates – Polar Vessels and Cryogenic Offshore Engineering

With its exceptional low-temperature toughness at -40°C and a minimum yield strength of 355 MPa, ABS EH36 marine steel plate is currently the material of choice for projects in cold waters worldwide. It is widely used in merchant vessels operating on Arctic routes, specialised icebreakers, offshore wind farms in cold regions, Arctic drilling platforms and construction machinery for high-latitude ports. This article provides a detailed overview of its applications to assist you with your material procurement.

1. Construction of Specialised Polar Vessels

1.1 Icebreakers and Research Vessels

Hull plating, ice-breaking and collision-protection strips, bow reinforcement plates and pressure-resistant bulkheads are subjected to prolonged impact, compression and freezing temperatures from ice. ABS EH36 is the only general-purpose high-strength ship plate that meets polar ice-breaking class requirements.

1.2. Arctic Route Transport Vessels

Polar bulk carriers, oil tankers and LNG carriers: decks, sides and reinforced keels withstand the extreme sub-zero temperatures and impact from floating ice in the Arctic Ocean, eliminating the risk of brittle fracture.

2. Cold-Climate Offshore Oil and Gas Platforms

2.1 Arctic Fixed Jack-up Platforms

Support columns, critical joints and anti-freeze reinforcement plates.

2.2 Self-elevating Platforms in Cold Waters

Thickened leg plates, locking mechanisms, and low-temperature load-bearing base plates.

2.3 Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) Vessels

Low-temperature pressure-resistant tanks, stiffeners, and ice-resistant structures.

3. Cold-Climate New Energy and Port Machinery

3.1 High-Latitude Offshore Wind Power

Wind turbine jackets, tower stiffeners, and foundation load-bearing structures for the waters of Northern Europe, Russia and Northern China, designed to withstand cold snaps, sea ice and severe storms.

3.2 Cold-Climate Port Machinery

Gantry cranes and quay cranes in extremely cold regions: base main beams and load-bearing structures that do not deform or become brittle at low temperatures, ensuring uninterrupted operation throughout the year.

In high-latitude, ice-covered waters and along the Northern Sea Route, the use of ABS EH36 is mandatory; no downgraded alternatives are permitted, otherwise the vessel will fail to pass ABS classification society inspection.
