Knowledge
The Grade A steels of the following classification societies are essentially equivalent to CCS Grade A marine structural steel in terms of mechanical properties and chemical composition:
| Classification Society | Equivalent Grade |
|---|---|
| CCS (China Classification Society) | Grade A |
| ABS (American Bureau of Shipping) | Grade A |
| LR (Lloyd’s Register) | Grade A |
| DNV (Det Norske Veritas) | Grade A |
| BV (Bureau Veritas) | Grade A |
| NK (Nippon Kaiji Kyokai) | Grade A |
| KR (Korea Register of Shipping) | Grade A |
| RS (Russian Maritime Register of Shipping) | Grade A |
Some steel mills are capable of producing CCS Grade A marine steel plates bearing multi-class certification marks, meaning that a single steel plate simultaneously meets the requirements of multiple classification societies, including CCS, ABS, LR and DNV.
When procuring steel, CCS Grade A steel plates with multi-class certification offer the following advantages:
Flexibility: Can be used on vessels registered under different flags.
Reduced inventory: A single type of steel plate meets the requirements of multiple projects.
Faster approval: No need for duplicate certification of materials.
Although Grade A marine steel plates certified by various classification societies are considered equivalent, there are still certain differences in inspection frequency, marking requirements and thickness tolerances. For example, DNV’s acceptance criteria for ultrasonic testing (UT) of thicker steel plates are stricter than those of CCS.
