Technical Specifications for LR Grade AH32 High-Strength Marine Steel Plates

LR Grade AH32 is a high-strength hull structural steel plate certified by Lloyd’s Register (LR) of the United Kingdom. It is widely used in ocean-going vessels, coastal engineering vessels, and conventional offshore structures. This article describes its chemical composition, mechanical properties, low-temperature impact toughness, dimensional range, tolerance standards, and the full scope of LR certification requirements.

1. Chemical Composition

LR Grade AH32 is a fine-grained killed steel that achieves a balance between strength and workability through strict impurity control and optimized alloy ratios. Its chemical composition (wt%) complies with the latest LR specifications:

ElementContent (wt %)
C≤ 0.18
Si≤ 0.50
Mn0.90 - 1.60
P≤ 0.030
S≤ 0.030
Cu≤ 0.35
Cr≤ 0.20
Ni≤ 0.40
Nb0.02 - 0.05
V0.05 - 0.10
Ti≤ 0.02
Mo≤ 0.08
Als≥ 0.015

Carbon Equivalent (CEV) ≤ 0.40% (ensures cold forming, bending, and welding performance, and eliminates the risk of cold cracking).

2. Mechanical Properties

All LR Grade AH32 shipbuilding steel plates have undergone authoritative testing by LR, demonstrating stable performance and suitability for conventional as well as medium- and low-temperature marine environments:

Yield Strength (ReH), MPaTensile Strength (Rm), MPaElongation (A), %
≥ 315450 - 570≥ 22

3. Low-Temperature Impact Toughness

Thickness, mmTemperature, ℃Impact Energy, KV2 / J
LongitudinalTransverse
≤ 500≥ 31≥ 22
> 50 - 700≥ 38≥ 26
> 70 - 1500≥ 46≥ 31

Low-temperature impact toughness: Mandatory 0°C Charpy V-notch impact test ensures there is no risk of brittle fracture under medium- and low-temperature operating conditions, serving as the core performance guarantee for its use as a mainstream steel for ocean-going vessels.

4. Full-Process LR Certification Requirements

LR AH32 steel plates strictly adhere to the full-process production and inspection standards of the LR Code:

1) Covering the entire production chain, including smelting, controlled rolling, microstructural homogenization treatment, and high-precision finishing;

2) Each batch must undergo sampling inspections for chemical composition, mechanical properties, and impact toughness at 0°C (with 100% coverage of key indicators);

3) Finished products must obtain an EN 10204 Type 3.2 certificate and an official LR classification inspection report for high-strength shipbuilding steel, which serve as mandatory qualification documents for ocean-going cargo ships, passenger ships, and conventional offshore engineering projects.

5. Dimensional Range

To meet diverse construction needs, LR Grade AH32 shipbuilding steel plates offer a wide range of dimensional options:

Thickness: 5 - 150 mm

Maximum width: 4,000 mm

Maximum length: 18,000 mm

6. Tolerance Standards

Thickness tolerance: ±0.25 mm

Flatness deviation: ≤1.8 mm/m

Edge perpendicularity and flatness: Zero deviation
