Equivalent Materials for LR Grade B Shipbuilding Steel Plates

LR Grade B is a ordinary-strength structural steel for shipbuilding certified by Lloyd’s Register (LR). In the international shipbuilding and offshore engineering sectors, because the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) has established uniform and coordinated technical specifications, ordinary-strength marine steels of corresponding grades from member classification societies are essentially consistent in terms of chemical composition and mechanical properties. Therefore, LR Grade B has clearly defined equivalent grades in the standards of other classification societies and national standards.

1. Equivalent Steel Grades of Various Classification Societies

This is the most direct and most commonly used method of equivalence in the industry. As long as the materials have been certified by the corresponding classification society (factory approval and product certificate), the following materials are fully equivalent in terms of specifications:

Classification Society NameAbbreviationEquivalent Steel Grade

Note: When substituting equivalent materials, suppliers must be required to provide factory approval certificates and product inspection certificates from the corresponding classification society. Without classification society certification, the material cannot be used in shipbuilding, even if the material composition is identical.

We can provide dual or multiple classification society certifications upon customer request, fully meeting the ship engineering acceptance standards of various countries and regions.
