Characteristics and Advantages of S235J2W Weathering Steel Plates

Knowledge
Through the addition of alloying elements such as Cu, Cr, and Ni, S235J2W weathering steel gradually forms a dense, stable, and strongly adherent protective rust layer (patina) in natural atmospheric environments.
This rust layer effectively reduces the rate of subsequent corrosion, making it more suitable than ordinary structural steel for long-term exposure to outdoor atmospheric conditions.
The “J2” quality grade requires impact testing at -20°C, with a minimum impact energy absorption of typically 27 J, making it more suitable than S235J0W weathering steel plates for outdoor structures in cold regions and areas with significant temperature fluctuations.
S235J2W weathering steel belongs to the S235 strength class. Its typical mechanical properties are as follows:
Yield strength: ≥ 235 MPa (plate thickness ≤ 16 mm)
Tensile strength: 360–510 MPa
As plate thickness increases, the minimum yield strength decreases accordingly, meeting the load-bearing requirements for general construction, bridges, outdoor equipment, and steel structures.
This steel grade is a low-carbon weathering structural steel with good weldability and fabrication properties. It can be used for conventional steel fabrication processes such as cutting, welding, drilling, and bending. When actually welding, welding procedures should still be established based on plate thickness, welding method, preheating requirements, and chemical composition.
After natural oxidation, the surface of S235J2W weathering steel plates gradually forms a rust layer that transitions from orange-brown and reddish-brown to dark brown. This layer combines structural functionality with architectural aesthetic value, making it particularly suitable for projects with specific appearance requirements, such as building facades, landscape structures, and sculptures.
Elements such as Cu, Cr, and Ni promote the formation of a stable, protective rust layer.
In suitable environments, it can reduce the need for traditional anti-corrosion coatings and periodic maintenance.
Meets impact toughness requirements at -20°C, making it suitable for cold environments.
With a yield strength grade of S235, it meets the requirements for general load-bearing structures.
Suitable for conventional steel structure welding and fabrication.
The protective rust layer reduces the rate of subsequent atmospheric corrosion.
Naturally forms a reddish-brown to dark brown weathering rust layer.
In suitable exposure environments, it reduces the use of paint and anti-corrosion coatings.
