Common Delivery Conditions for CCS EH36 Shipbuilding Steel Plates

CCS EH36 shipbuilding steel plates have extremely high requirements for low-temperature toughness; therefore, delivery in the hot-rolled condition is generally not permitted. Depending on CCS specifications and the thickness of the steel plate, the common delivery conditions for CCS EH36 high-strength shipbuilding steel plates are TMCP, normalised and quenched and tempered. Additional conditions such as Z-direction property testing, non-destructive testing and surface treatment may also be selected.

I. Basic Delivery Conditions

1. TMCP (Thermomechanically Controlled Rolling)

The most commonly used and cost-effective process. Grain refinement is achieved through controlled rolling and cooling, resulting in excellent low-temperature toughness (impact at -40°C).

Suitable for: Mainstream specifications with thicknesses ≤ 50 mm.

2. Normalised (N)

The steel is heated to above Ac3 and then air-cooled, resulting in a uniform microstructure and low residual stresses.

Suitable for: Thicknesses > 50 mm, or areas requiring high toughness and weldability.

3. Quenched and Tempered (Q+T)

Quenching followed by high-temperature tempering achieves an optimal balance between strength and toughness.

Applicable to: Thickness ≥ 80 mm, or critical components subjected to high stresses (e.g. deck plating, high-strength decks).

II. Additional Conditions (Optional)

1. Z-direction properties

Z-direction properties: Z15 / Z25 / Z35 (resistance to laminar tearing; commonly used for thick plates).

2. Non-destructive testing (UT)

Grade I, Grade II, Grade III ultrasonic testing.

3. Surface treatment

Shot blasting, painting, anti-corrosion coating.
