S355J0W is a weather-resistant structural steel specified in the European standard EN 10025-5, with the material number 1.8959. Its resistance to atmospheric corrosion is enhanced through the addition of alloying elements such as Cu and Cr. S355J0W weather-resistant steel plates are suitable for structural components—such as bridges, buildings, vehicles, steel structures, and outdoor equipment—that are subject to long-term exposure to the atmosphere.

6. Weathering Properties

The core characteristic of S355J0W weathering steel plates is resistance to atmospheric corrosion. Alloying elements such as Cu and Cr added to the steel promote the formation of a dense, stable protective rust layer on the surface, which effectively reduces the subsequent corrosion rate in appropriate atmospheric environments characterized by alternating dry and wet conditions.

This protective rust layer is typically brownish in color, which is why S355J0W is often classified as Corten steel (weathering steel).

It should be noted that weathering steel cannot be used without coating in all environments. If exposed for extended periods to high humidity, standing water, high salt fog, or heavily polluted atmospheric conditions, the protective rust layer may not form stably. In such cases, coating or other corrosion-protection measures should still be taken based on the actual service environment.


7. Delivery Conditions

The standard delivery conditions specified in EN 10025-5 are hot-rolled or normalized rolled.

For the +N condition, the material may undergo hot forming or normalizing treatment after delivery.

The standard also states that these steels are generally not considered to require heat treatment, but stress-relief treatment is permitted.

Common ordering requirements include:

Delivery condition: Hot-rolled (AR) or +N (normalized/normalized-rolled, as specified in the contract)

Surface quality: Compliant with relevant standards such as EN 10163

Material certificate: EN 10204 Type 3.1 certificate

Third-party inspection: May be added as specified in the contract


8. Welding and Fabrication

S355J0W weathering steel plates offer good fabricability and can undergo conventional fabrication processes such as cutting, drilling, bending, and welding.

Welding procedures must comprehensively consider factors such as plate thickness, carbon equivalent, preheating temperature, heat input, and welding consumable compatibility. Actual welding operations must be performed in strict accordance with the relevant WPS (Welding Procedure Specification) and PQR (Welding Procedure Qualification Record), in conjunction with the material manufacturer’s process recommendations.

S355J0W weathering steel plates are primarily suitable for applications requiring structural strength and atmospheric corrosion resistance, such as:

Precautions for Use:

Weathering steel is not suitable for all corrosive environments. In areas subject to prolonged submersion, persistent high humidity, high-chloride marine environments, or poor drainage, a stable and dense protective rust layer may not form. Under such conditions, a coating or other additional corrosion protection measures are typically required.
