Technical Specifications for S235J0W Weathering Steel Plate

S235J0W is a low-alloy structural steel resistant to atmospheric corrosion, designated as grade 1.8958 in the European standard EN 10025-5. It is characterized by the addition of alloying elements such as Cu, Cr, and Ni to standard structural steel, which imparts superior atmospheric weathering resistance and enables the formation of a stable protective rust layer. EN 10025-5:2019 specifies the technical delivery conditions for its hot-rolled flat products and long products.

3. Carbon Equivalent

CEV ≤ 0.44%

According to the IIW formula:

CEV = C + Mn/6 + (Cr+Mo+V)/5 + (Ni+Cu)/15

A lower carbon equivalent indicates that S235J0W has relatively good weldability.

During actual welding, specific procedures should still be determined based on plate thickness, welding heat input, preheating temperature, ambient temperature, and the welding procedure qualification (WPS/PQR); the need for preheating should not be judged solely based on the CEV.

* The yield strength of S235J0W decreases as the steel plate thickness increases.

5. Impact Properties

* “J0” is a very important quality grade designation in the S235J0W grade, indicating that the impact test temperature is 0°C.

6. Delivery Conditions

ConditionDescription
Hot-rolled (+AR)The steel plate is delivered directly in the hot-rolled condition after rolling and is suitable for certain conventional structural applications.
Normalized (+N)The microstructure and properties are more uniform, making it more suitable for structural components with higher requirements for toughness and microstructural stability.

Specific delivery conditions are subject to the terms of the order.

7. Weather Resistance

The primary difference between S235J0W and standard S235 structural steel is its improved atmospheric corrosion resistance.

Elements such as Cr, Cu, and Ni promote the formation of a relatively stable and dense protective oxide layer on the steel’s surface. After natural exposure, the surface typically develops a decorative reddish-brown/dark brown rust layer over time.

Its main advantages include:

1) Good atmospheric corrosion resistance

2) Reduced long-term maintenance and repainting requirements

3) Good structural strength

4) Good weldability

5) Good machinability and formability

6) A natural rusted appearance

7) Suitable for bridges, buildings, railways, and outdoor steel structures

However, it is important to emphasize that weathering steel cannot be used completely exposed in all environments. In environments characterized by prolonged moisture, standing water, high salt content, or marine spray, its weathering performance may decline significantly; specific design considerations should be based on the actual corrosion environment.

8. Weldability

S235J0W is a weldable structural steel; however, due to its alloying elements and carbon equivalent, the specific welding procedure must be determined based on the plate thickness, carbon equivalent, ambient temperature, welding method, welding consumables, heat input, preheating temperature, and interpass temperature.

Welding procedure qualification is particularly important for thick plates, low-temperature environments, or highly constrained welded structures.
