Key Technical Advantages of DNV EH32 Marine Steel Plates

Quality inspection is a critical step in ensuring that DNV Grade DH36 shipbuilding steel plates comply with international marine engineering standards. DNV has established comprehensive inspection specifications for DH36 steel plates, covering chemical composition, mechanical properties, surface quality, dimensional accuracy, and internal defect detection.

DNV EH32 is a marine steel plate certified by Det Norske Veritas (DNV) for use in polar and cryogenic environments, with a minimum yield strength of 315 MPa and capable of stable service at -40°C. Compared to standard A32/D32 ship plates, EH32 offers significant advantages in low-temperature toughness, lightweight design, corrosion fatigue resistance, weldability, and global certification recognition, as detailed below:

1. Leading -40°C Ultra-Low-Temperature Toughness

The greatest advantage of DNV EH32 lies in its excellent low-temperature impact resistance. Unlike A32 (0°C impact test) and D32 (–20°C impact test), EH32 must pass the –40°C Charpy V-notch impact certification. Its stable low-temperature microstructure effectively prevents brittle fracture under ultra-low-temperature and alternating load conditions, fundamentally resolving the safety issues associated with failures and disasters caused by conventional ship plates in high-latitude cold regions and polar marine environments.

2. Balance Between High Strength and Lightweight Structural Design

DNV EH32 has a minimum yield strength of 315 MPa and a stable tensile strength range, providing reliable structural load-bearing capacity.

Thanks to its high strength, designers can optimize plate thickness selection while ensuring structural safety, thereby achieving weight reduction in ship hulls and offshore platforms.

This optimization reduces the deadweight of polar vessels, improves navigational efficiency and cargo-carrying capacity, and simultaneously reduces fuel consumption during long polar voyages.

3. Excellent Resistance to Marine Corrosion and Fatigue

DNV EH32 employs a low-impurity, microalloyed formulation. In high-salinity, low-temperature marine environments, it forms a dense, protective oxide film on its surface, effectively resisting seawater erosion, salt spray corrosion, and wet-dry cycling corrosion.

At the same time, its refined grain structure endows the steel with excellent fatigue resistance, enabling it to withstand prolonged wave impact and alternating loads.

Compared to standard D32 steel, the structural fatigue life in polar marine environments can be extended by more than 35%.

4. Excellent Weldability and Suitability for Construction in Cold Regions

With a maximum carbon equivalent (CEV) of ≤ 0.36%, DNV EH32 exhibits low weld sensitivity and excellent workability, making it suitable for conventional marine engineering welding processes such as submerged arc welding, gas shielded arc welding, and manual arc welding.

Even in low-temperature construction environments, welding defects can be effectively avoided through standardized preheating and interpass temperature control.

Additionally, the material offers good cutting, bending, and rolling properties, making it suitable for the complex curved surface processing requirements of polar ship hulls and irregularly shaped offshore platform structures.
