Characteristics and Advantages of S355J2WP Weathering Steel Plates

Knowledge
Containing weathering alloy elements such as Cu, Cr, Ni, and P, this steel rapidly forms a dense, stable, brownish-red protective rust layer (patina) when exposed to the open air, effectively slowing corrosion of the base metal. It is suitable for industrial atmospheres, humid environments, and coastal salt fog conditions, but is not suitable for long-term submersion in water.
Under suitable atmospheric conditions, it reduces reliance on traditional paints and anti-corrosion coatings, thereby lowering subsequent maintenance, repainting, and labor costs.
“S355” indicates a yield strength grade of 355 MPa (specific values vary with plate thickness), meeting the design requirements for bridges, buildings, vehicles, and other load-bearing structures.
“J2” indicates that the material must meet the specified values for impact testing at -20°C, making it suitable for engineering applications in lower ambient temperatures and providing greater resistance to cold brittleness in outdoor structures in cold regions.
With a controllable carbon equivalent, it can be cut, bent, drilled, and welded using conventional methods. Due to its slightly higher phosphorus content, its weldability is slightly inferior to that of S355J2W, requiring the use of appropriate welding procedures.
Over time, the surface naturally develops a uniform, rustic patina, achieving a paint-free architectural aesthetic. It is widely used in building facades, landscape sculptures, and other fields, offering unique industrial and landscape artistic value.
Provided that design, environmental, and drainage requirements are met, the material can be used in an uncoated state, allowing it to naturally form a protective rust layer and avoiding the visual and maintenance issues associated with traditional coating systems.
It is more suitable for long-term exposure to the atmosphere than ordinary carbon steel.
It eliminates or reduces the need for coating, thereby lowering costs associated with periodic rust removal, painting, and maintenance.
With a high strength grade of 355 MPa, it allows for thinner plate thickness under equivalent load conditions, reducing the structure’s dead weight and saving on steel consumption.
Combines weathering corrosion resistance with low-temperature toughness at -20°C, simultaneously meeting the dual requirements of corrosive environments and cold-weather conditions.
Significantly outperforms standard S355 steel in terms of service life in atmospheric environments; suitable for long-term outdoor components such as bridges, curtain walls, towers, and truck bodies.
It can be left exposed to rust as an architectural finish or painted as needed; it is available in hot-rolled and normalized (+N) grades, and can be customized to meet non-destructive testing and Z-direction property requirements.
Under applicable conditions, it reduces paint consumption and material waste during painting and maintenance, making it environmentally friendly.
