Knowledge
S355J2W weathering steel plate retains the outstanding self-corrosion protection capabilities of weathering steel. Its Cu-Cr alloy system undergoes continuous oxidation in alternating dry and wet conditions and in low-temperature atmospheric environments, gradually forming a dense, non-flaking, and strongly adherent brown passivated rust layer (patina) on the steel surface.
This stable rust layer effectively blocks oxygen, snowmelt, and corrosive media, inhibiting the spread of internal corrosion and providing self-healing protection.
As the service life extends, the rust layer becomes increasingly dense, enabling the steel to maintain stable corrosion resistance in long-term cold and humid environments.
For plate thicknesses ≤16 mm, the minimum yield strength is ≥355 MPa, the tensile strength is 470–630 MPa, and the elongation is ≥22%. The material exhibits sufficient plasticity and strong resistance to impact deformation.
Under equivalent loads, plate thickness can be reduced, thereby lowering dead weight and saving material costs.
S355J2W weathering steel plates possess excellent resistance to deformation and fatigue, enabling them to stably withstand long-term static loads, frequent wind loads, and low-temperature stress in cold outdoor environments.
It effectively resists structural deformation and fatigue failure caused by low-temperature embrittlement, environmental corrosion, and cyclic loads, fully meeting the safety design requirements for bridges in cold regions, high-altitude landscape structures, northern energy facilities, and low-temperature municipal infrastructure.
With a low-carbon composition (C ≤ 0.16%) and low carbon equivalent, the risk of cold cracking during welding is low, making it suitable for conventional processes such as submerged arc welding and gas shielded arc welding.
It exhibits stable performance during cold bending, cutting, and hole-drilling operations, with minimal risk of cracking during processing.
S355J2W weathering steel plates support long-term, paint-free use in cold atmospheric environments, eliminating the need for frequent anti-corrosion coating renewals and structural maintenance required for ordinary carbon steel.
Its stable, protective rust layer ensures a service life of over 30 years in cold regions, reducing full-lifecycle maintenance costs by approximately 35% to 45% compared to coated steel structures.
Compared to high-performance weathering steels with excessive redundancy, S355J2W weathering steel plates offer moderate procurement costs and well-suited performance for conventional projects in extremely cold regions, providing outstanding value for money and engineering practicality.
