The core characteristic of S235J0W weathering steel lies in its self-protective effect: when exposed to the atmosphere, a stable oxide protective layer (patina) gradually forms on the steel’s surface, blocking the penetration of moisture, oxygen, and pollutants into the steel substrate. This provides superior long-term corrosion resistance compared to ordinary carbon steel.

S235J0W weathering steel plate is a medium-to-low-strength weathering structural steel. Its primary mechanical properties are as follows:
Yield strength: ≥235 MPa
Tensile strength: 360–510 MPa
Impact energy at 0°C: ≥27 J
Suitable for general load-bearing structures, such as bridge structures, building steel structures, outdoor equipment frames, and railway transportation facilities.
This steel grade features a low-carbon design with a low carbon equivalent, offering good weldability. It can be welded using conventional methods such as gas shielded arc welding (MAG/MIG), manual arc welding (SMAW), and submerged arc welding (SAW).

When exposed to the natural environment over the long term, the surface of S235J0W weathering steel forms a uniform reddish-brown to dark brown oxide layer, which combines industrial and artistic effects. It is widely used in architectural exterior wall cladding, landscape engineering, sculptural art structures, and public park facilities.
Unlike ordinary steel, which requires a paint coating, weathering steel simultaneously fulfills both structural and decorative functions.
It offers excellent cutting, drilling, cold-bending, and forming capabilities, meeting the standard processing requirements for steel structure fabrication.
Ordinary steel typically requires sandblasting for rust removal, anti-corrosion primer, topcoat protection, and periodic repainting; S235J0W weathering steel plates form their own protective rust layer, reducing the frequency of anti-corrosion maintenance and making them particularly suitable for environments with long-term exposure.
The protective oxide layer slows further corrosion and provides superior durability in suitable atmospheric environments, making it suitable for outdoor bridges, elevated structures, railway facilities, and exposed parts of industrial buildings.
It reduces the use of anti-corrosion coatings, minimizes the need for subsequent repair work, and lowers VOC (volatile organic compound) emissions, better aligning with modern green building and low-maintenance design concepts.
