BV Grade B marine steel combines stable basic strength, impact toughness at 0°C, excellent process compatibility, and high cost-effectiveness. It precisely meets the material requirements for vessels and seasonal facilities in temperate waters, making it one of the most widely used structural steels in mid-latitude marine engineering. The following is an analysis of its core technical advantages and engineering value.

1. Low-Temperature Toughness at 0°C, Specifically Designed for Seasonal Temperate Oceanic Environments

The core advantage of BV Grade B shipbuilding steel lies in its optimized low-carbon low-temperature impact toughness. By raising the lower limit of manganese content and employing a precise grain refinement process, a uniform and dense ferritic-pearlitic microstructure is achieved, effectively suppressing low-temperature brittle fracture.

Compared to BV Grade A shipbuilding steel, BV Grade B shipbuilding steel maintains stable toughness even under mild low-temperature conditions at 0°C. It is perfectly suited to the seasonal temperature drops characteristic of temperate waters, preventing structural fatigue and crack propagation caused by winter temperature fluctuations, and is more suitable than room-temperature shipbuilding steel for year-round navigation in mid-latitude waters.

2. Stable Comprehensive Mechanical Properties and Structural Durability

BV Grade B shipbuilding steel retains the strength parameters of BV standard-strength shipbuilding steel: minimum yield strength of 235 MPa and tensile strength of 400 - 520 MPa, enabling it to reliably withstand static and alternating wave loads on medium-sized cargo ships, passenger ships, and coastal workboats.

The uniform grain structure ensures consistent structural stiffness and prevents localized performance degradation under long-term alternating loads. Improved structural density and fatigue resistance effectively withstand wave impacts and marine environmental corrosion, ensuring a stable service life for structural facilities in temperate oceans.

3. Excellent Weldability and Suitability for On-Site Construction

BV Grade B shipbuilding steel has a low carbon content, with the carbon equivalent strictly controlled at ≤0.40%. It exhibits low susceptibility to cold cracking and excellent general weldability, making it suitable for mainstream marine welding processes such as SAW, GMAW, and SMAW.

For conventional plate thicknesses (≤20 mm) and ambient temperatures, no preheating is required; under mild low-temperature conditions (0 - 5°C), only a 60°C staged preheat is needed, and no complex post-weld heat treatment is required. Welded joints exhibit a good balance of strength and toughness, with a low defect rate and high forming quality.

It also offers excellent cold-forming, cutting, and rolling properties, supporting efficient fabrication of complex ship hull structures and enhancing shipyard construction efficiency.

4. Enhanced Resistance to Marine Corrosion and Fatigue

BV Grade B shipbuilding steel is produced using a purified smelting process, resulting in low sulfur and phosphorus impurity levels and a dense internal microstructure that effectively resists seawater immersion corrosion and salt spray erosion in temperate waters.

The optimized manganese content further improves the material’s fatigue resistance under alternating low-temperature wave loads, delaying crack propagation caused by seasonal temperature drops and periodic wave impacts.

When used in conjunction with conventional marine anti-corrosion coating systems, its service life significantly exceeds that of ordinary carbon steel, fully meeting the operational requirements for the entire life cycle of marine engineering projects in temperate waters.

5. Performance-Cost Balance Strategy for Mild Operating Conditions

BV Grade B shipbuilding steel bridges the performance and cost gap between Grade A and Grade D marine steels: it adds the necessary low-temperature toughness at 0°C based on Grade A, without incurring the high manufacturing costs of Grade D/E ultra-low-temperature steels, thereby precisely meeting the requirements of temperate marine engineering projects.

Compared to Grade D/E steels, procurement and construction costs can be reduced by approximately 15% to 20% while still meeting seasonal low-temperature safety standards; compared to Grade A steel, it effectively mitigates structural safety risks caused by seasonal temperature drops. Mature mass production processes and stable market pricing make it a material choice with outstanding cost-effectiveness for year-round offshore engineering projects in mid-latitude regions.
