DNV EH36 Material Specification

DNV EH36 is a high-strength, cryogenic marine structural steel certified by Det Norske Veritas (DNV), belonging to the high-end Grade 36 marine steel series. This steel grade is specifically designed for polar marine environments, deep-sea offshore platforms, and heavy-duty ship hull structures. Compared to traditional Grade 32 marine steel, it offers higher strength properties, excellent low-temperature toughness, and stable structural durability. As a microalloyed fine-grained steel, DNV EH36 fully complies with DNV marine steel specifications and is widely used in high-standard global offshore engineering projects. This article outlines its chemical composition, mechanical properties, dimensional specifications, and requirements for compliance with standards throughout the entire production process.

1. Chemical Composition

DNV EH36 is a fully killed, fine-grained, microalloyed steel that employs strict impurity control and an optimized carbon equivalent design to balance strength, toughness, and weldability.

Its chemical composition (mass fraction, %) must comply with the following DNV specifications for marine steels:

· Carbon (C): ≤ 0.18%

· Silicon (Si): 0.10% - 0.50%

· Manganese (Mn): 0.90% - 1.60%

· Phosphorus (P): ≤ 0.025%

· Sulfur (S): ≤ 0.025%

Additionally, through the precise blending of microalloying elements such as nickel, copper, and niobium, the grain structure is refined to enhance ultra-low-temperature impact toughness. The maximum carbon equivalent (CEV) is limited to 0.40% to effectively reduce the risk of cold cracking during welding and improve weldability for heavy-duty offshore engineering structures.

2. Mechanical Properties and Performance Specifications

DNV EH36 is certified by DNV, a third-party inspection body, and features enhanced mechanical properties specifically tailored for extreme marine conditions:

Yield strength (ReH): ≥ 355 MPa

Tensile strength (Rm): 490 - 630 MPa

Elongation (A): Meets DNV code ductility requirements, ensuring excellent structural ductility under alternating wave loads and ice loads

Its core performance advantage lies in the mandatory -40°C Charpy V-notch impact test, which ensures stable resistance to brittle fracture in cold, high-latitude polar waters, making it the material of choice for heavy-duty, extreme offshore structures.

3. DNV Certification and Standard Compliance Requirements

All qualified DNV EH36 steel plates must undergo production and inspection throughout the entire process in strict accordance with DNV classification rules, covering high-purity smelting, controlled rolling and cooling, normalizing heat treatment, and comprehensive inspection of finished products.

Only steel plates that pass all performance tests and dimensional inspections are eligible to receive the official EN 10204 Type 3.2 certificate and the DNV survey report.

This mandatory certification is a prerequisite for applications in polar icebreakers, deep-sea floating platforms, and ultra-large offshore engineering projects, effectively eliminating barriers to entry for global projects.

4. Standard Size Range

DNV EH36 marine steel plates cover a complete range of dimensions to meet the customized construction needs of large offshore structures:

Thickness range: 5 mm - 150 mm

Maximum width: 4,000 mm

Maximum length: 18,000 mm

The large-thickness specifications meet the load-bearing structural requirements for thick plates in ultra-large vessels and deep-sea platforms. The standardized size series helps reduce the number of welds, lower construction costs, and significantly enhance the overall stiffness and integrity of heavy-duty hull structures.
