For marine steel, the term “corrosion resistance” refers primarily to the base material’s (the steel itself) ability to resist corrosion when properly protected, rather than being “stainless” in the sense of stainless steel.
Definition of Corrosion Resistance:
As structural steel for ship hulls, its corrosion resistance primarily stems from a well-designed alloy composition, ensuring that the steel meets the service requirements of a vessel in a marine environment when protective measures, such as painting, are properly applied.
Performance Characteristics:
Steel manufacturers may describe their products as having “good corrosion resistance,” but this is a completely different concept from specialized corrosion-resistant steels (such as 316L stainless steel).
Comparison Reference:
Compared to BV Grade A steel in the same series, BV Grade B steel undergoes mandatory 0°C Charpy V-notch impact testing to ensure toughness in colder environments; however, this does not significantly enhance its intrinsic corrosion resistance.
The corrosion resistance of BV Grade B marine steel relies heavily on standardized surface preparation and coating systems, which are core requirements of classification society regulations.
Surface Preparation Standards:
Prior to painting, the steel surface must be thoroughly cleaned and dried, with all contaminants—such as mill scale, rust, and oil—completely removed. For coatings requiring a high level of protection, a sandblasting standard of Sa 2.5 is typically required.
Common Surface Preparation Methods:
1) Sandblasting/Shot Blasting:
Removes rust and scale, providing an anchor-chain-like roughness that serves as the foundation for strong coating adhesion.
2) Shop Primer:
A temporary protective primer applied immediately after steel pretreatment to prevent short-term rusting during construction.
3) Final Coating System:
A multi-layer coating system designed by the shipowner and shipyard based on the vessel’s specific operating environment (e.g., ballast tanks, hull plating). Examples include high-performance polysiloxane topcoats or zinc-rich epoxy primers.
4) Strict Classification Society Requirements:
According to classification society regulations, the hull surface typically requires at least two coats of approved coatings, particularly in underwater areas, and the coatings must be compatible with the cathodic protection system and must not adversely affect it.
The corrosion resistance of BV Grade B hull structural steel is basic and limited; its excellent corrosion protection performance is based on strict surface preparation (especially Sa 2.5-grade sandblasting) and a high-quality coating system.
