Characteristics of BV AH36 Shipbuilding Steel Plates

BV AH36 shipbuilding steel plates are widely used in the construction of large ocean-going vessels (such as bulk carriers, container ships, and oil tankers) and in critical structural components of offshore oil and gas platforms that are subject to high stress, such as hull plating, decks, main frames, bulkheads, and superstructures. The following are its key performance characteristics.

1. High-Strength Load-Bearing Performance

The core advantage of BV AH36 shipbuilding steel plates lies in their outstanding high-strength mechanical properties:

Yield strength (ReH): ≥ 355 MPa

Tensile strength (Rm): 440 - 630 MPa

This strength level significantly exceeds that of ordinary low-carbon marine steel, enabling the steel to withstand greater static loads and alternating wave loads. Through a fine-grain strengthening smelting process, the steel develops a dense and stable internal microstructure, providing excellent structural rigidity and resistance to deformation. It effectively resists structural deformation and localized stress damage caused by the deadweight of ultra-large vessels, severe storm impacts, and deep-sea navigation, fully meeting the heavy-duty service requirements for the main structures of large container ships, bulk carriers, and offshore platforms.


2. Stable Low-Temperature Toughness at 0°C and Resistance to Brittle Fracture

BV AH36 shipbuilding steel plates have passed the mandatory 0°C Charpy V-notch impact toughness certification and are suitable for seasonal low-temperature environments in temperate and subarctic waters.

It maintains full structural toughness and crack resistance under the effects of low-temperature seawater corrosion and cold surges.

The optimized low-carbon, high-purity composition effectively suppresses the low-temperature brittle transition, mitigating the risk of brittle fracture caused by sudden temperature drops and cold surges during navigation, thereby ensuring the year-round safe operation of marine structures.


3. Excellent Marine-Grade Weldability and Adaptability to On-Site Construction

The carbon equivalent of BV AH36 shipbuilding steel plates is strictly controlled at ≤0.40%. Ultra-low levels of harmful impurities confer low susceptibility to cold cracking during welding and excellent marine weldability, making it suitable for mainstream, high-efficiency welding processes such as SAW, GMAW, and SMAW:

1) Conventional thin to medium plates (≤20 mm) require no preheating under normal construction conditions;

2) Thick plates (>20 mm) or in low-temperature, humid environments require only low-level preheating at 80 - 100°C, with no need for complex post-weld heat treatment.

3) Weld joints exhibit a good balance of strength and toughness, resulting in low defect rates and high fabrication quality, which significantly improves shipyard construction efficiency.


4. Excellent Seawater Corrosion Resistance and Fatigue Performance

BV AH36 shipbuilding steel is produced using vacuum degassing and deep purification smelting processes, resulting in extremely low sulfur and phosphorus content, which effectively reduces internal inclusions and defects.

Its dense, fine-grained microstructure enhances resistance to seawater immersion corrosion, salt spray erosion, and damage from marine biofouling.

Under long-term alternating wave loads and tidal cycle impacts, it exhibits excellent fatigue resistance, effectively delaying the initiation and propagation of fatigue cracks.

When combined with a specialized marine anti-corrosion coating system, the design service life can exceed 30 years, meeting the full lifecycle operational requirements of commercial vessels and offshore facilities.


5. Optimal Balance of Performance and Cost

BV AH36 shipbuilding steel plates provide reliable structural strength under heavy loads and low-temperature adaptability while avoiding the high costs associated with premium steel grades, achieving an optimal balance of performance and cost for mainstream commercial marine projects.

Compared to ultra-high-strength steel, it reduces overall procurement and construction costs by approximately 20% to 25% while fully meeting heavy-load safety standards;

compared to ordinary low-carbon steel, it completely eliminates the risks of structural deformation and fatigue failure under high marine loads.
