Knowledge
S355J0WP weathering steel plates feature high-strength mechanical properties optimized for long-term outdoor load-bearing conditions. With yield strength graded by plate thickness and tensile strength maintained at a stable range of 470–630 MPa, they can reliably withstand long-term static structural loads, frequent wind-induced vibration loads, and seasonal temperature stresses.
Through controlled rolling and homogenization heat treatment processes, a dense and uniform ferritic-pearlitic microstructure is achieved, providing excellent structural rigidity and resistance to deformation. This effectively resists structural deformation, localized stress damage, and fatigue failure caused by long-term environmental exposure and load cycling, fully meeting the high load-bearing requirements of outdoor building structures, highway bridges, power transmission towers, and support structures for energy equipment.
The most prominent technical advantage of S355J0WP weathering steel plates lies in their unique mechanism of atmospheric corrosion resistance.
The steel is alloyed with corrosion-resistant elements such as copper (Cu) and chromium (Cr) in scientifically optimized proportions. After several cycles of wetting by rain and drying, a dense, stable, brownish-red passivated oxide film gradually forms on the surface, tightly covering the steel substrate. This film effectively isolates the steel from corrosive media such as external oxygen, rainwater, and dust, fundamentally inhibiting the continued corrosion of the internal metal.
Unlike ordinary steel, which forms loose, flaking rust layers that accelerate corrosion, the stable rust layer of S355J0WP weathering steel plates achieves protective passivation, significantly reducing the frequency of subsequent anti-corrosion maintenance and lowering full-lifecycle operating costs.
S355J0WP weathering steel plates feature controlled low carbon equivalence (CEV ≤ 0.52%) and strict limits on sulfur and phosphorus impurities, resulting in low susceptibility to cold cracking during welding and providing excellent weldability for outdoor structural engineering.
They are suitable for mainstream welding processes such as submerged arc welding (SAW), gas metal arc welding (GMAW), and shielded metal arc welding (SMAW).
1) Conventional medium- and thin-gauge plates (≤20 mm) require no preheating under dry construction conditions;
2) Thick plates or construction during the rainy season require only low-level preheating at 60–80°C, with no need for complex post-weld heat treatment.
3) The strength and weather resistance of welded joints match those of the base material well, resulting in a low defect rate and stable forming, which significantly improves construction efficiency and structural reliability for outdoor projects.
S355J0WP weathering steel plates possess natural aesthetic characteristics not found in ordinary structural steel.
In the early stages of use, they exhibit a uniform rust-red texture; as the surface passivation film stabilizes, they gradually develop a refined, matte, dark brown metallic finish that harmonizes seamlessly with natural landscapes and modern architectural styles.
This natural rust layer does not flake or fade, eliminating the problems of peeling and fading associated with traditional painted steel structures. It is widely used in architectural facade decoration, landscape art installations, the exterior structures of cultural venues, and urban public facilities, achieving an organic integration of structural function and architectural aesthetics.
