Comparison of Properties and Selection of ABS AH32 / DH32 / EH32 High-Strength Shipbuilding Steel Plates

AH32, DH32 and EH32 are all 315 MPa-grade high-strength shipbuilding steel plates certified by ABS. Their chemical composition, strength and elongation are essentially identical; the key difference lies in their low-temperature impact toughness temperatures (0°C / -20°C / -40°C), which determine their suitability for specific environments. DH32 offers the best value for money and is suitable for the vast majority of ocean-going vessels; EH32 is used in extremely cold waters; AH32 is used in warmer waters or for non-low-temperature structures.

ABS Grade AH32 High-Strength Marine Steel Corrosion Protection Scheme

ABS AH32 is a high-strength marine steel that is susceptible to pitting corrosion, stress corrosion cracking (SCC) and galvanic corrosion in marine environments. Protection should be provided through a four-pronged strategy comprising ‘coating + cathodic protection + structural optimisation + operational and maintenance management’, with design tailored to specific zones: the marine atmosphere zone, the splash zone, the tidal zone, the fully submerged zone and the seabed sediment zone.

Equivalent material to ABS Grade AH32

ABS Grade AH32 is a high-strength structural steel for ship hulls, certified by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS). The term ‘equivalent’ generally refers to alternative grades that meet the same mechanical properties and chemical composition requirements under different classification society standards. In the international shipbuilding and offshore engineering sectors, the AH32 steel standards established by the major classification societies are largely consistent in terms of technical specifications; consequently, they are generally regarded as equivalent products. In global procurement and project substitution, clearly identifying equivalent materials can significantly reduce costs, shorten lead times and ensure compliance.

Welding procedure specification for ABS Grade AH32 shipbuilding steel plates

As a high-strength shipbuilding steel plate, the welding quality of ABS Grade AH32 directly determines the structural safety and service life of the hull. In accordance with ABS classification society regulations and general industry standards, we have compiled a Welding Procedure Specification (WPS) for ABS AH32 steel plates, covering the selection of welding consumables, pre-welding preparation, welding parameters, interpass temperature control and post-welding inspection, to provide a technical reference for shipyards and the offshore engineering sector.

Properties of ABS Grade AH32 shipbuilding steel plates

The ABS Grade AH32 is a high-strength, high-toughness shipbuilding steel plate certified by the American Bureau of Shipping, offering excellent weldability. It is widely used in hull structures, decks, bulkheads and offshore platforms. This paper provides a detailed analysis of the chemical composition, mechanical properties, processability, corrosion resistance and application characteristics of AH32 steel plates, offering a technical basis for material selection, structural design and the formulation of welding procedures.
