Every compliant ABS Grade EH36 steel plate must be accompanied by a Material Test Certificate (MTC) bearing the stamp of an ABS surveyor. In addition, the surface of the steel plate should bear a clear stamp indicating ‘ABS EH36’, the furnace number, the batch number and the classification society mark.

Within this standard, EH36 is a specific steel grade, the technical requirements of which are essentially consistent with the definitions of EH36 established by the major classification societies (such as ABS, CCS, DNV, BV and LR). In actual production, steel mills typically ensure that steel plates comply with both the ASTM A131 standard and the relevant specifications of the classification societies (such as ABS, CCS, DNV, BV and LR).

ABS EH36 marine steel plate has good weldability, but the following points should be noted:

Welding consumables: Low-hydrogen welding consumables must be selected that match the strength and toughness of EH36.

Preheating: Depending on the thickness, appropriate preheating may be required to prevent cold cracks.

Heat input control: Avoid excessive heat input, as this can cause grain coarsening in the heat-affected zone, thereby reducing low-temperature toughness.

The main difference lies in the impact test temperature. ABS DH36 is tested at -20°C, whereas ABS EH36 is tested at -40°C, offering superior performance in colder climates and effectively preventing brittle fracture in extremely cold seawater environments.
